Aamby Valley India Bridal Week kicked off on Friday with Manish Arora showing a collection comprising highlights of his shows in London and Paris.

The chief runway, modelled in a semi-circular fashion, is flanked by two others built a few steps below. Models climb on to the runway against the backdrop of water pools and fountains on either side.

All put together, the runway measures 140 feet with three rows of seating that run along the catwalk. Palm trees lined along the pools sway by the side. The circular hotel rooms at the Sahara Star, Mumbai are lit up as the central atrium is host to the first Aamby Valley India Bridal Week (AVIBW).

Bright creations
The event kicked off on Friday with Manish Arora showing a collection comprising highlights of his shows in London and Paris. His outfits shown may not have quite adhered to the bridal theme of the event but to the audience it was an awe-inspiring experience what with the designer being known for his creativity and installation-like, bright creations. The second showing, by Rocky S, had both Indian and western silhouettes in a somewhat muted colour palette. Surfaces laden with embroidery, the outfits are ideal for wedding and pre-wedding dos.

“We have had bad experiences in the past and decided to sit back until we got our money,” said a model on condition of anonymity. “They don’t even have the schedule for rehearsals for the next day and we have not signed written contracts either. How can we trust anyone?”

A handful of female models too complained about not having adequate arrangements made on this count. With Vivek Oberoi deciding to tie the knot, the presence of Bollywood celebrities was missing in the event except for actress Dia Mirza who closed Rocky’s show with her walk.

But all that begins well ends well too. Cheques were finally signed and given away, and models walked and the shows started late on the first day. And this is how AVIBW marked the beginning of yet another fashion event in the country!
