Diwali inspires fashion brand Chanel

After launching an India-inspired collection last year, French fashion house, Chanel will introduce a limited edition desi makeup range, this month. Called Bombay Express Summer 2012, the collection will have a range of beauty products including a gold nail paint titled Diwali.

After launching an India-inspired collection last year, French fashion house, Chanel will introduce a limited edition desi makeup range, this month.



Called Bombay Express Summer 2012, the collection will have a range of beauty products including a gold nail paint titled Diwali, which the brand’s creative director of makeup, Peter Philips, described as "a homage to the celebration of light that takes place in India." The range will also have a shimmery graphite black eyeshadow called Nirvana.

Fashion designers back home welcome the idea. Designer Gaurav Gupta says international brands are inspired by an idea of ‘opulent’ India. "Foreign designers have been inspired by our country for ages. References go back to colonial India — from maharajas to their luxurious lifestyle," says Gupta.



Designer Kanika Saluja agrees, "This will cater to the growing Indian clientele for foreign brands. It’s a smart, sales-driven move."
