Stalls, food, games, and cultural activities – Diwali time is always fun for students in Delhi University (DU) as various colleges across the city organise grand Diwali melas. Taking the enthusiasm a notch higher this year, however, are the girls of Gargi College are doing a run up to their Diwali mela. The students of the college have decided to go ethnic every day till the day of their mela.
“Our Diwali mela is going to be bigger than ever this year as it is the college’s Golden Jubilee celebration and we want that to show in everything we do. Doing a run up is a good way to jazz up,” says Nupur Aggarwal, student and public relations officer.
The festivities started with the celebration of dandiya raas on October 19. “It was bindi-jhumka day on October 20, next day was long skirt day, October 24 was dupatta-bangles day, and today we are gearing up for kala chashma day, to add a pinch of fun. We’re doing this because if someone wears bindi or bangles, people say itna kyu ready ho ke aaye ho. So we are giving them a reason to dress up,” says Garima Tandon, union president.
