Designer Suneet Varma along with Vogue India will use Indian motifs to create the world’s longest sari

Designer Suneet Varma has decided to give a whole new spin to the sari. Varma, along with Vogue India, has conceptualised the world’s longest sari. The 55-metre long sari will be unveiled at the high glam event, Vogue’s Fashion Night Out on September 10, at the DLF Emporio in Delhi.

Excited about his new endeavour, Varma says, “For the Fashion’s Night Out, when Priya Tanna, the editor of Vogue, wanted something unprecedented, we came up with the idea of the world’s longest sari.” On being asked how long it took him to finish the sari, Varma says, “With 150 people working on the sari, we finished it in 12 weeks.”

About the inspiration for the piece, Varma says, “The inspiration was India, so I have put typically Indian motifs, such as religious deities, elephants, peacock and monuments.”

About the intricate work on the sari, Varma says, “I have used embroidery that looks like lace appliqué, brocade, sequin work, crushed flower and chiffon work. The sari is a long piece, but interestingly, every five yards, the colours and the work changes. The most intriguing Indian elements such as, a wedding procession and the celebration of cow as a religious symbol has found a place in this sari.”
