Gurgaon horror: Police admit to delay, say there was ‘laxity’ in filing rape charges

A woman sub-inspector of IMT Manesar police station was suspended on Tuesday for lapses.

The Gurgaon police on Wednesday admitted that there has been a delay of two days in filing rape charges in the Manesar gang rape case.

A  woman sub-inspector of IMT Manesar police station was suspended on Tuesday for lapses.

The 19-year-old victim, a native of Uttar Pradesh, lived in a rented accommodation at Bas Kusla village in Manesar. She had approached the police on May 30 and a case for the murder of her nine-month-old daughter was registered.

She later approached the police again on June 1 and complained that she was also gang-raped on May 29, the same night the three accused killed her child. The accused allegedly raped her in a four-wheeler – a Tata Magic van. Initial reports suggested that the crime took place in an auto rickshaw but the police clarified on Wednesday that it was a seven-seater four-wheeler.

The police, however, added rape charges to the case on June 3, but there was a delay in providing the victim counselling and legal help. Dharambir Singh, Assistant commissioner of police Manesar, conducted initial inquiry after which a woman sub-inspector was suspended.

Khirwar said the victim first complained of murder of her child for which a case was registered on May 30. The victim told the police that she was apprehensive that her husband might leave her after knowing about the gang rape and that is why she did not mention in the initial statement to the police.

Later, she approached the police on June 1 and told them about the rape.

Khirwar admitted there has been lapses by officials at the police station in handling the case.

“We are providing psychological and legal counselling to the victim and all help will be provided to them,” said Khirwar.
