The city police has collected a total of Rs93 lakh in fines this year with unauthorised parking, driving in the opposite direction of traffic, driving without seat belts and riding bikes without helmets being the most frequent violations. As per data available with the Gurgaon police, the amount has been collected through 46,392 challans issued till July 25 this year.

According to the data of the Gurgaon police, on an average 250 challans are issued daily by the traffic police.

“On the days when special drives are carried out, we have issued 600 to 700 challans for unauthorised parking, 125 to 150 challans for driving in the wrong lane and similar violations. However, for the department, traffic management and enforcement go hand in hand,” said Simardeep Singh, deputy commissioner of police (DCP), traffic.

Several other violations listed by the Gurgaon police include vehicles without pollution under control (PUC) certificate, number plates not in proper pattern, drink driving, jumping red lights and using mobile phone while driving. The number of challans for using mobile phones while driving is very less, but Singh said directions have been issued to curb this habit as well.

“We need to remove encroachments, improve road engineering and make changes in traffic movement as it will help in smoother traffic movement and lead to lesser violations,” said Singh.

With traffic police expecting to add 500 personnel to its force soon, the department’s officials said enforcement will become stricter and more effective across the city. However, enforcement at night has been a weak point as the shift system that has been working in Delhi is yet to be effectively introduced in Gurgaon.
