A 56-year-old IAS officer died on Wednesday after he fell from the stairs and was left unattended for hours at his home in Sector-15.

According to the post-mortem report, Harbaksh Singh, who was posted as additional chief secretary, renewable energy, died due to massive bleeding. Singh sustained injuries on his temple, chest and left knee. But none of them were deep. “The accident took place between 11pm and 1am. He was found lying in a pool of blood. Although the injuries were not deep, he died due to massive bleeding as he remained unattended till around 3.30 am,” said Dr Deepak Mathur, forensic expert, Civil Hospital.

The officer who fell from a 10 feet spiral staircase in his Park View apartment remained unattended until one of his family members saw him. He was taken to the hospital around 4am, where the doctors declared him brought dead.

The forensic expert said that the officer could have been saved, if he was given immediate first-aid. “Chances of death in such cases are very slim. None of his vital organs were damaged. A simple stitch for his head injury would have saved his life,” explained Dr Mathur.

Sources said that Singh had quit alcohol recently. Doctors suspect him to have been consuming anti-depressants. “We have sent his vital organs to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) in Madhuban, Karnal,” said Dr Mathur.
