Driving on the Old Delhi Road has become an ordeal after digging work by the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) started a week ago to lay down underground sewer pipelines for Dundahera village.
The busy road connects the national Capital with Gurgaon near the Kapashera border.
The project, work on which will continue for the next 12 months, has disrupted traffic moving towards Kapashera-Sadar on a one-km stretch near the Maruti factory.
On top of that, the digging has become a major source of air pollution.
The Haryana State Pollution Control Board (HSPCB) regional officer, Balraj Singh, said, “I agree that the digging work is causing air pollution and I will inspect the site tomorrow. The executing agency will be prosecuted if the pollution level is above the permissible limit.”
The MCG had started digging the stretch without ensuring the safety of commuters, cyclist and pedestrians as no sign boards were put up to warn commuters.
“There is no space to throw dug-up waste which is why we used the main carriageway for such purpose. However, we will ensure that the traffic movement goes uninterrupted and air remains unpolluted,” said Udaibir Singh, executive engineer, MCG.
