The Gurgaon police claimed to have recovered Rs10.96 lakh cash in scrapped Rs1,000 and Rs500 notes on Tuesday evening as part of its recent crackdown on illegal use of demonetised currency notes.

This was the third such recovery in two days. Police had earlier reported recoveries of Rs35 lakh and Rs15 lakh in scrapped notes in two separate incidents.

The recovery of Rs10.96 lakh in scrapped notes was made on Tuesday evening from a person in Sanjay Gram area under Civil Lines police. He was caught with 900 notes of Rs1,000 and 392 notes of Rs500, said assistant sub-inspector, Umesh, the police spokesperson.

Police said the man told them during questioning that he had planned to exchange the scrapped notes for new currency notes at a bank. “He said he had exchanged Rs10 lakh from a bank earlier too,” said the spokesperson.

Umesh added that police have handed over the money to Income Tax department officials who will probe its source.

Gurgaon police have been cracking down on transportation of old currency notes for the past two days. On Tuesday morning, a team from the Sector 29 police station intercepted a Mercedes Benz at Galleria traffic signal based on a tip-off and seized Rs35 lakh in scrapped currency from the passengers Nikhil, Anurag and Rajan.

On Monday evening, police seized Rs15 lakh in Rs1,000 notes from Pramod Gupta of Subhash Nagar. Gupta was arrested with the cash from New Colony, police said. They added that he told them the money was to be paid to a property dealer who had promised him 30% commission.
