Doctors say that many take vitamin pills without any reason, because they think it makes them feel better. But is it right? Chetna Joshi Bambroo talks to experts.

With our busy and stressful lifestyles and routines shuttling between home and office, the most convenient thing to make up for not eating on time is popping any vitamin pill we get our hands on. Doctors say that many take vitamin pills without any reason, because they think it makes them feel better.

Balanced diet
“Popping vitamin pill without any reason is a habit with majority of people,” says Daljit Kaur, nutritionist, Escorts Heart Institute and Research Centre. “One should always consult a doctor before taking any vitamin supplement. Most of the vitamins are available in the food we consume, so one should have a balanced diet, and accumulate vitamins from the natural resources.”

Access vitamin deposition can lead to severe ailments, caution doctors. “Vitamin A, D, E, K are fat soluble, and any access dosage gets deposited in the liver and kidney, causing Hypervitaminosis. 500 mg of Vitamin C tablet taken 3-4 times a day, can cause ACOxalate stones in the kidney,” says Dr Ashutosh Shukla, Artemis Health Institute.

Flip side
“Overdose of Vitamin A can cause Hydrocephalus (accumulation of water in the brain). Side-effects of overdose of vitamins, especially fat soluble vitamins, can vary from cramps, nausea, headache, dryness, and breathing problems to irreversible calcium deposits in soft tissues,” says Dr Nidhi Verma.
