Christopher Nolan may have hired Tom Hardy, Kenneth Branagh and recent Oscar winner Mark Rylance in his new World War II movie Dunkirk, but they’re all playing supporting characters. For the lead, Nolan has recruited the relatively unknown Fionn Whitehead.
The British actor has only one credit to his name - the British miniseries Him. He is as unknown as they come. He isn’t even represented by an American agency yet. The news was first reported by The Wrap.

Dunkirk is based on Operation Dynamo, a rescue mission to save more than 3,00,000 Allied forced surrounded by German troops in 1940.

The film is about to begin production this May in France, after Nolan was spotted scouting for locations there recently. It will be shot on 65mm film and IMAX 65mm, a favourite of Nolan’s, by his Interstellar cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema. It will also mark his sixth collaboration with composer Hans Zimmer.
