His win comes as a shock to supporters of Democrat candidate Hillary Clinton, who for months has been the frontrunner to win office. She counted among her supporters some of the most famous public figures in the world, from Beyonce and Jay-Z to Lena Dunham and Joss Whedon, all spreading the same message: #ImWithHer.

But as election night unfolded, and the results started coming in, Twitter turned into a war zone. Soon, it became clear that the landslide win they were anticipating would not happen. Instead, Trump claimed victory in one swing state after another, and at a little after 1 PM India time, Hillary called him to concede defeat.

Twitter meanwhile, prepared to batten down the hatches.
