After surviving the earthquake in San Andreas, and proving, yet again mind you, that he can open a movie all by himself, Dwayne Johnson has officially settled on his new project. And his choice comes as a slight surprise.
The Wrap reports and EW confirms that The Rock will produce and star in the remake of a cult classic from the 80s: Big Trouble in Little China.
Kurt Russell starred as trucker John Burton in the cult John Carpenter film, which was initially designed as a western but evolved into a martial arts flick set in the seedy underworld of San Francisco’s Chinatown.
As director John Carpenter hilariously said in an interview with Robert Rodriguez: Big Trouble is a movie where Kurt Russell slowly realizes he isn’t the hero but rather the sidekick.
So will the film play out like another Mad Max: Fury Road?
The original Big Trouble grossed only $11 million on a $20 million budget, but gained huge popularity on the home video circuit. It also helps that it happens to be one of Johnson's favourite movies. Maybe there is hope yet for a Dredd or Unbreakable sequel a few decades down the line.
Johnson will appear in HBO series Ballers this month and is expected to reprise his role in the Fast and Furious sequel set for 2017 and DC’s Shazam.
