The first theatrical trailer for Kong: Skull Island, the King Kong reboot from Warner Bros, was released online on Thursday.
The first thing that stands out in this trailer is that this Kong movie is in fact a period film, probably set around the Vietnam war. There’s also vintage tech on display, an Apocalypse Now vibe, and some of those iconic helicopters from that era. What this also means is that it will act as a prequel to the Godzilla movie that came out in 2014, with which it shares a universe.
Unlike the 2005 King Kong, directed by Peter Jackson, this film does not look like a direct remake of the classic 1933 film. It is an updated version which belongs firmly in the Godzilla/Kong (maybe even Pacific Rim?) universe that Warner Bros is developing.
As our heroes discover, Kong isn’t alone on his island. In this version, he has subjects, both human and otherworldly. Maybe this would have worked better as a twist in the film, but they’ve made the decision to reveal that Skull Island also houses several subterranean monsters, who are awakened after the US army bombs the island.

Starring Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, John Goodman, Toby Kebbell, Samuel L Jackson and John C Riley, director Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ film is scheduled for a March 10 release.
