Special effects company Legacy Effects has released a tremendously interesting behind-the-scenes peek at their process in creating an animatronic dinosaur that featured in a pivotal scene in the global blockbuster film Jurassic World.
When Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park was released back in 93, little did we know how majorly it was going to change the movie industry, specifically the world of CGI.
Spielberg is no stranger to redefining the summer blockbuster. He essentially invented the sub-genre with Jaws in the 70s and went on to leave his stamp in every successive decade.
With Jurassic World, the triumphant return to Isla Nublar, Spielberg hired another director, Colin Trevorrow, to advance his vision. A new decade afforded modern special effects and a greater attention to detail in realising a uniquely expansive world.
The world needs to suck the viewer in and create an immersive experience. And the film-makers handed over the CGI to the legendary folks over at Industrial Light & Magic.
But for one memorable scene in the film that required practical effects and not binary, the producers turned to a company known as Legacy Effects that has a rather impressive resume: Some of the films they've worked on include The Avengers and X-Men: Days of Future Past.

{{/usCountry}}The Apatosaurus death scene in the film reminded us of the power of visual effects: It made us care deeply about a character made of latex and foam. It made an inanimate creature come to life with the wizardry of make-up and robotics.
And what a fascinating video this is. The care and effort it took dozens of artists to create the head and neck of a dinosaur that would have only a few seconds of screen-time is a testament to the creative force that is the often under-appreciated effects department. It is also a brilliant case, along with the movies of Chris Nolan and Mad Max: Fury Road for the re-emergence of practical effects in modern blockbuster movie-making.
