If you’ve been scrolling through social media of late, you might have spotted tiny gold or crystal studs twinkling on ears. These aren’t just cute accessories; they’re ear seeds, a needle-free twist on acupuncture that’s going viral for helping with relaxation, sleep, and calm moments. In fact, even BTS’s J-Hope has been spotted rocking them!

But, what is ear seeding?

Ear seeding may look like jewellery, but it’s actually a form of auriculotherapy, a type of alternative medicine that targets specific points on the ear to influence different parts of the body. While inspired by traditional Chinese medicine, ear seeding is usually seen as a wellness practice rather than a medical treatment.

“Tiny seeds, usually from the vaccaria plant or made of metal, are placed on specific points in the ear with adhesive tape. Gentle pressure on the seeds stimulates nerves in the ear, which is believed to support stress relief, sleep, digestion, emotional balance, and even pain management,” says Dr Meena Agrawal, Senior Consultant ENT Surgeon at PSRI Hospital.

How it works

Ear seeding works by gently stimulating points on the outer ear linked to the vagus and trigeminal nerves, which help regulate the body’s stress response. Pressing these points signals the brain to manage cortisol levels, potentially reducing anxiety, promoting relaxation, and supporting emotional balance. Suitable for both children and adults, it can also ease motion sickness, travel stress, and restlessness, while offering a mindful pause during busy days.

He adds, “For sensitive skin, it’s best to use hypoallergenic adhesive tapes and seeds made from materials like stainless steel, gold-plated beads, or natural vaccaria seeds. Nickel-based or low-quality metal beads should be avoided, as these can trigger allergic responses. The adhesive should be breathable and gentle to reduce sweat or moisture buildup, which can irritate the skin.”

Why people are loving it

Ear seeding has become a trendy mix of wellness and style. These tiny beads, often Swarovski crystals or gold-plated, double as fashion accessories while stimulating points on the ear to promote relaxation. Nikita Arora, a Delhi University student, says, “It looks like jewellery but actually helps me relax after a hectic day at college. It’s like carrying a tiny meditation tool in my ear.”
