A 48-year-old woman on her way home was run over by a speeding luxury car when she was crossing the road in Delhi Cantonment area on Tuesday afternoon, police said. The woman later died at the hospital.
Deputy commissioner of police (south west) Amit Goel said that the victim was identified as Jaiwanti, a resident of Mehram Nagar, and the accused was identified as Deepak, a resident of Mandoli, who drove a BMW. Police, however, refused to share details of the BMW owner.
According to the family, Jaiwanti was a contractual employee of the Delhi Cantonment Board and worked as a house help in the Mehram Nagar police colony.
Police received a PCR call about a road accident at 12 pm. “The police staff immediately reached the spot and found that the injured woman had already been shifted to DDU Hospital, where she was declared dead,” Goel said.
Police said Jaiwanti was hit by a car while crossing the road, and the driver fled the scene. Locals then reached the spot and took her to the hospital, where she was declared dead.

{{/usCountry}}Her family said locals informed them about the accident, after which they blocked the road opposite the Mehram Nagar police colony, demanding immediate arrest.
Sandeep, 25, who drives an ambulance at a private hospital, said, “My mother was on her way home for lunch when the accident happened. The driver of the BMW drove at a very high speed and didn't stop after hitting my mother. He left her bleeding on the road. The least he could do was take her to the hospital.”
The family members blocked the road for about three hours, demanding to meet the BMW's driver. The son said, “After about two and a half hours, police came to inform us that the driver had been arrested and was at the police station. But we wanted to see him for ourselves to ensure they had arrested the right person. Some people had seen the driver, but they have not shown him to us.”
Her relatives said Jaiwanti was the family's primary breadwinner and was taking care of her son and three married daughters.
Sonu Prajapati, 45, a relative, said, “Her husband passed away many years ago and the son works on and off. Who will run their house now? The son should now get a permanent job, and the family should receive heavy compensation from the driver.”
Police said a case has been registered on charges of causing death by negligence and rash driving.
“Deepak was traced and arrested within two hours, and further investigation is underway. His medical examination has been conducted to verify if he was drunk at the time of the incident, and reports are awaited,” a senior police officer said.
Police said Deepak lives with his wife and children in East Delhi’s Mandoli. He has been working as a driver for the last six months. Police said he was returning from the airport and was alone in the car when the accident occurred.
