Three people were killed and three others grievously injured when a state-run Road Transport Corporation bus hit them after its brakes failed on a busy road in Andhra Pradesh’s Vijayawada city on Friday morning.

Police said the driver of the Metro Express city bus travelling from Wambay Colony at Gannavaram to the Vijayawada bus stand lost its control as it reached Ajitsingh Nagar near the bridge on Budameru rivulet. It rammed into an auto-rickshaw and four two-wheelers, besides hitting some pedestrians.
Officials said the damage would have been more if an alert truck driver ahead of him had not blocked the road with his vehicle. The bus hit the lorry and came to a halt, they added.
Two pedestrians – Khurshed (40) and her son Hurshad (12) – died on the spot and four others received serious injuries. One of them succumbed while being shifted to the government hospital on Eluru Road.
While the bus driver fled the spot, the agitated relatives of the victims set fire to the bus.
The police arrived at the spot and doused the flames immediately.
