Parliamentary affairs minister Ananth Kumar sought an apology on Thursday from Congress leaders for misbehaving with Speaker Sumitra Mahajan when they were demanding discussion on lynchings across the country.
He said the way suspended Congress MPs behaved with Mahajan, they would have invited serious charges under the law had they been outside the House.
“I appeal to the Congress leaders, they should apologise to the Speaker and admit the actions were against democracy. This is the temple of democracy and she is the head. She is a woman…If you did this outside, you would have invited sections of the IPC,” Kumar said, after MPs from both sides stood at their seats protesting loudly against each other.
Mahajan expunged a phrase Kumar used. The House was adjourned for 25 minutes during Question Hour due to commotion over the break up of the grand alliance in Bihar and opposition MPs demanding discussion on lynching.
At noon, Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge wanted the Speaker to start a discussion after she rejected the adjournment motions moved by different members.
“As many as 50 people have been killed. If we can’t discuss it here, where will we do it? Are we going to take out adjournment motions from the rule book?” Salim said loudly, prompting several BJP MPs to stand at their places and shouting back.
