Gujarat municipal polls LIVE: BJP leads with 93, AAP secures 27 seats

While the Congress has won 43 of the declared seats so far. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), a new entrant in these elections, has made impressive inroads by winning 18 seats so far.
Earlier, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani and Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel had expressed their gratitude to the voters and BJP workers for the results.
There are 144 wards across six municipal corporations — Ahmedabad, Surat, Rajkot, Vadodara, Bhavnagar and Jamnagar. Among the voters were names like Union home minister Amit Shah, Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani and Karnataka governor Vajubhai Vala. Polling took place from 7am-6pm. Total 2,276 candidates were in the fray across the six municipal corporations. In a release, the state election commission said that the voter turnout was 46.1%, up from 45.81% in 2015. The BJP fielded the highest number of candidates at 577, followed by the Congress at 566. Delhi’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), meanwhile, fielded 444 candidates. Other parties to field candidates were the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM.

Modi says results show people's faith in politics of development
With the BJP set to retain power in six Gujarat municipal corporations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday termed the results "very special" and said that for a party serving a state for over two decades to record such a phenomenal win is noteworthy.
He said the results of municipal elections clearly show the unwavering faith people have in politics of development and good governance.
The BJP appeared on course to retain power in the six municipal corporations, winning 409 of the 474 seats where results were declared till evening.

Gujarat CM thanks people, BJP workers for win
With results showing BJP's win in the state, Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani said, "I thank the voters of all the 6 metros. I thank all the BJP workers who have worked hard in this election. I assure the people of Gujarat that the BJP will not let the trust placed in the BJP go to waste."
The government will not spare any effort for the development of 6 Municipal Corporations in the coming days, the chief minister said.

Gujarat municipal elections: Early trends indicate big gains for BJP
After counting of votes for six municipal corporations in Gujarat began at 9am, early trends till 11am showed that ongoing farmers protest, fuel price rise are not likely to dent the ruling BJP's vote bank locally. Ahmedabad recorded the lowest turnout of 42.51 per cent, while Jamnagar saw the highest turnout of 53.38 per cent, followed by 50.72 per cent in Rajkot, 49.46 per cent in Bhavnagar, 47.84 per cent in Vadodara and 47.14 per cent in Surat.
