Jammu and Kashmir Police chief SP Vaid on Tuesday allayed fears about possible street protests following Hizbul Mujahideen commander Altaf Ahmed Dar’s killing in Anantnag on Wednesday.
Dar’s killing followed an attack in Shopian that left four policemen dead. The attack triggered fears about the kind of protests seen in the aftermath of Hizbul commander Burhan Wani’s killing in July 2016.
Vaid said Dar had spearheaded the street violence post Wani’s killing but underlined that there had been no violence across Kashmir except the Shopian attack.
“Nowhere else has any major violence taken place; everything is fine and under control,” he said.
Over 100 people were killed in the street protests following Wani’s killing. Vaid said they do not anticipate any protests like in 2016 but added adequate measures will be taken to prevent them.
