The woman, identified as Niku, was five months pregnant. Husband Deepak said he fell in love with Niku a year after her brother, the suspected killer Vikram of Jhajjar, got married to his sister Rozi in 2014.

“Vikram and his family were not happy with our marriage, but we went ahead,” Deepak said.

He alleged that Vikram came to his home along with a few friends on Thursday, pulled out a pistol and fired at Niku before running away. He said the murder happened when he “went to make tea for them in the kitchen while my wife was sitting with them”.

“I took my wife to PGI Khanpur Kalan where doctors pronounced her dead on arrival,” he said.

Police booked Vikram for murder and trespassing. He and his friends are on the run.

The murder happened a few weeks after a Sonepat court sentenced five members of a family to life imprisonment for killing their 17-year-old daughter, who had eloped with a man from a different caste.

In another case in November 2016, a man fired three shots at his pregnant sister for marrying a man from a lower caste. She survived the attack and gave birth to a boy.
