The bodies of a 31-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman were found at the Mandi Market in Uttarakhand’s Haldwani on Thursday, police said, and added the heads and faces of the two were smashed with stones.

Police said they were informed about two bodies lying in a pool of blood around 7.30am. They found the blood-stained stones scattered nearby. Preliminary findings suggested that the two were bludgeoned to death.Police recovered an Aadhaar card, which helped establish the man’s identity.
Senior police superintendent Manjunath TC, who inspected the crime scene, said multiple teams have been formed to trace and arrest the accused. “All aspects of the case are being investigated, including the background of the deceased, their activities in Haldwani, how long they had been staying here, and the circumstances leading to the crime,” he said.
Police superintendent Manoj Katyal said that the motive behind the murders is yet to be ascertained. “We are examining all possible angles and questioning people in the surrounding areas. CCTV footage from nearby locations is also being scrutinised.”
