At least five persons were killed and over a dozen injured when a van driver, trying to escape after mowing down a cyclist on the Delhi road late Wednesday, hit a number of other vehicles including two-wheelers and cycle-rickshaws before he was caught.

The incident occurred around midnight when the parcel van driver, who had entered the city, ran over a cyclist near Mohkampur industrial area, police said. Speeding up in a bid to run away from the spot, he collided with a scooter near Shoprix Mall and then a van carrying meat near Delhi Chungi, sending raw meat all over the road.
The scared driver increased his speed further and hit a few rickshaws at the Baghpat road crossing before his vehicle rode up the divider and overturned, trapping at least half a dozen rickshaw pullers and people travelling on them. Hearing the screams of the trapped people, local residents and others rushed there to pull them out.
The driver was caught and thrashed before being handed over to the police.
Superintendent of police (city) Ranvijay Singh reached the spot along with more personnel and injured persons were sent in hospitals for treatment and dead bodies for post-mortem. One of the deceased was identified as Arun Kumar of Madhavpuram locality.
