The Centre on Thursday announced Padma Shri awards on the occasion of the Republic Day eve. India's first woman elephant mahout Parbati Baruah famously known as ‘Hasti Kanya’, and tribal environmentalist Chami Murmu, are among the 34 people who have been awarded the Padma Shri.

What is a Padma Shri award?

The Padma Shri award is the fourth-highest civilian award of the Republic of India after the Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan, and the Padma Bhushan. The awards are conferred in recognition of distinguished contributions in various spheres of activity including the arts, education, industry, and social service, among others.

All persons without distinction of race, occupation, position, or sex are eligible for these awards. However, government servants including those working with PSUs, except doctors and scientists, are not eligible.
