Passengers travelling aboard the Delhi-Mumbai Rajdhani Express on Wednesday claimed that their cash and other belongings were stolen while the train was on its way to Delhi.
The passengers, mostly Mumbai residents, alleged that cash and jewellery worth over Rs 10 lakh were stolen from them in the train.
The incident came to light around 9am, when passengers came to the Hazrat Nizamuddin railway police station and informed about a theft in at least three coaches of the train.
Police said at least 10 passengers alighted from the train when it approached the Hazrat Nizamuddin station and went to the railway police station there to file their complaint.
The 10 passengers, who were mostly from AC Three Tier coaches, told police that they had detected the theft of their cash and jewellery at Ratlam, but could not get down and file a complaint.
“The passengers said that the thefts happened when they were asleep. Nobody complained of being sedated or drugged. They did not notice any outsider entering their coach. The ticket examiner also claimed he did not notice any outsider entering the coach,” said a police officer.
The train thieves reportedly fled with wallets and jewellery. After removing the money, they threw the wallets near the toilets and below berths. Police said most of the targeted passengers were those sleeping or occupying lower berths, a police officer said. He added that the thieves did not touch laptops, mobile phones or other electronic gadgets.

{{/usCountry}}Delhi railway police officers said that there could be more complainants, because many people had got down at Mathura and said they did not wish to report the case.
“We registered an FIR here and have forwarded it to the Madhya Pradesh police. Because the theft was detected there, it is possible that there are gangs who operate in that region. All the contents of the FIR and the contact details have been forwarded to Madhya Pradesh Police,” said a senior officer.
Ratlam Government Railway Police (GRP) in-charge Abhishek Gautam said, “We don’t have any information in this regard. If the incident took place in Ratlam and a case has been registered at a different railway station then we can investigate only after the case is forwarded to us.”
