The DMK chief underwent tracheostomy at the hospital after complaining of difficulty in breathing.
The former Tamil Nadu chief minister was admitted to the hospital for the second time in the last three weeks on Tuesday.
He was first admitted to Kauvery Hospital on December 1 for optimisation of nutrition and hydration, and was discharged after his condition improved.
The hospital issued a statement on Thusday night, saying Karunanidhi was readmitted with breathing difficulty due to throat and lung infection, but he was stable and under treatment.
Karunanidhi’s daughter and Rajya Sabha MP from Tamil Nadu, Kanimozhi, told ANI that he was suffering from a lung infection and breathing difficulty, adding that he was much better now.
