Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi called on Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa in Chennai on Friday and said the AIADMK leader’s health was “progressing”.
“She is going to be all right,” Gandhi told news persons after spending nearly 40 minutes inside the Apollo hospital and interacting with the doctors attending on the 68-year-old ‘Amma’.
“I came from Delhi to see the CM because I wanted to give my support and the Congress president’s support. The doctors say her health is improving and she is going to be all right. I want to give maximum energy to Jayalalithaa ji so that she gets well soon,” Rahul Gandhi said.
Gandhi landed in the state capital on a special aircraft and drove straight to Apollo.
The party’s top officials, including state Congress president Tirunavukkarasu, were in the dark about Gandhi’s sudden decision to visit Chennai to look in on Jayalalithaa who is undergoing treatment at Apollo since September 22.
Even the local police came to know of the development at around 11 am, when the Congress leader was airborne.
Gandhi’s motorcade reached Apollo at 11.55 am. The vehicle he was travelling was allowed inside the premises of the hospital, where Jayalalithaa is being treated by a panel of doctors that includes three specialists from AIIMS in Delhi.

Gandhi said that he carried good wishes from Congress president Sonia Gandhi, adding the entire party prayed she became well. “She is going to be all right,” he said again.
