Haryana dairy farmer Pehlu Khan’s family wants the case on his murder shifted out of the Rajasthan after six accused named by Khan got clean chit from the state police.
The family’s quest for justice has now brought them to the national capital. Khan’s eldest son Irshad told reporters here on Friday that they have no faith felt in the CID, Crime Branch of the Rajasthan police and wants the Supreme Court to order a fresh probe into the ruthless murder of his father.
“People who are accused are threatening us regularly. We are living in a miserable situation. The local Police are not helping us,” Irshad said as his mother Jebuna looked in despair.
Khan’s widow, her two children and two brothers-in-law came to Delhi two days after Hindustan Times reported that the six accused, named by Khan in his dying statement, got a clean chit from the state police.
The gruesome lynching of Pehlu Khan on the suspicion that he had bought cows for slaughter led to massive uproar and protests. The 55-year-old dairy farmer was waylaid by a mob in Alwar on April 1 and beaten up mercilessly. He died on April 3.
Jebuna, told HT how her entire family is now living in constant fear. “I don’t want my children to continue the dairy business we have.”
Irshad described how the accused have openly threatened him and his family and even the lawyers ask them to visit their chamber at night.
“The police officers also tell us that the accused are powerful and they can do anything to us,” adds Irshad.
Lawyer-activist Tehseen Poonawala announced that he wants to take up Pehlu Khan’s case in the Supreme Court next week while his brother, activist Shehzaad pointed out that the police gave the six accused a clean chit ignoring the statements of the dying Khan and the his son who was the eye-witness to the murder.
“This is perhaps the first time when a dying person’s statement was ignored, an eye-witnessed statement was ignored,” said Shehzaad, who pointed out that “the police maintained that the mobile phones of the accused were located in some other place. The CID, CB also relied on the statement of staff of a cow shelter, Rath Gaushala, who said that these six people were present in their premises. The irony is the one of the prime accused, Jagmal Yadav, patronises the cow shelter.”
Congress general secretary Digvijaya Singh attacked the BJP and accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi as “willing accomplice.” “He is responsible for instigating hate mood throughout the country. He maintains silence when people like Gauri Lankesh dies,” said Singh.
Shehzaad also pointed out that the bail order of one of the accused, Ravindra Singh, there are discrepancies. “On one page it is written that the accused (Singh) was seen in the video as trying to save Khan. On the second page it is mentioned that he was not at the murder spot.”
