Tension erupted in Assam’s Karimganj district after a 16-year-old Bajrang Dal member was allegedly stabbed to death on Sunday evening, police said, adding the accused has been arrested.

Prohibitory orders were imposed in Lowairpua Bazar area after local residents vandalised 12 shops to protest the killing, Karimganj deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Gitartha Sharma said.
The teenager was reportedly attacked by another teenager. The victim succumbed to injuries during treatment, the DSP said.
“Prima facie, it looks like a personal issue. However, we have managed to arrest the prime accused. He is a minor and the interrogation will proceed as per law,” he said.
“We are aware of the fact that angry locals vandalised some shops. But we have deployed adequate security personnel to control the situation,” he added.
Amid protests, the additional district magistrate later imposed Section 144 in the area until further orders.
Bajrang Dal’s senior office bearer Santanu Naik sought an unbiased probe and also compensation for the deceased’s family.
