AGARTALA: The opposition parties in Tripura, the Communist Party of India (Marxist), or the CPI(M), and the Trinamool Congress (TMC), alleged that their activists and offices have been targeted for political violence in the state after the announcement of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) assembly poll victory in 4 states on Thursday.

CPI(M) state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury said that at least 39 incidents of attacks on party offices in different parts of the state occurred till latest reports came in.

“It is natural that any political party will celebrate victory of their party even if the elections were conducted in some other state. But their celebrations should not invite violence. The incidents occurred in the state were undemocratic and fascist, “ said Chaudhury.

He also wrote to chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb seeking compensation for the affected persons and legal action against the persons who triggered the violence.

He alleged that political violence started prevailing in the state under the regime of the saffron party. “In a democracy, these incidents are unwelcome. Not a single person has been arrested in these cases so far.”

In a similar tone, All India Trinamool Congress’ Tripura unit alleged violence against opposition workers and demanded police action against the perpetrators.

If failed, the party would go for a massive protest, said the party convener Subal Bhowmik.

“The BJP-backed miscreants attacked party offices and houses of our supporters in the name of victory. The administration is not taking any step in this matter,” said Bhowmik alleging that they also received reports of setting ablaze a few shops at Bishalgarh in Sepahijala district.

The BJP hasn’t reacted on their allegations so far.
