Despite emerging as a winner, the Hitendra Thakur-led BVA recorded a sharp drop in its seat share as compared to 2015 civic body polls where it secured 106 seats, The Indian Express reported.

The counting of votes for the Maharashtra's 29 municipal corporations, including the crucial Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), started at 10 am on Friday, with the voting being conducted on Thursday, January 15. The VVMC has 29 wards across the city and recorded one of the highest voter turnout at 57.12% on Thursday.
The last election for the VVMC was held in 2015 and the BVA had emerged as the single largest party securing 106 of the 115 seats.

The Mahayuti is set to come to power in 25 of the 29 municipal corporations, including Mumbai.

As per the latest trends on Friday evening for 225 of the total 227 seats in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the BJP was leading in 88 seats followed by Shiv Sena-UBT (64), Shiv Sena (29), MNS (9), Congress (24), AIMIM (8), MNS (6), NCP (3).
