Ten policemen, including deputy superintendent of police, were today injured when irate villagers attacked them for allegedly trying to save the three women.

The trio had come from Banka to Barari and were talking to a child when the locals suspected them to be child lifters and started beating them up.

Police reached the spot and rescued the women. They then locked the trio inside a room of a school in order to protect them from the irate mob.

But the locals ransacked the school, pulled the women out of the room and assaulted them with lathis, prompting the police to lob teargas shells and use baton charge to disperse the mob.

Two of the three women were critically wounded in the attack and admitted to Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital here amid heavy security arrangements.

Police patrolling was intensified as tension mounted in the area, the sources said.
