The accident took place around 9 pm on Saturday on the Mumbai-Howrah national highway near Tumgaon village, 80 km north of the state capital.

"All the 11, including the driver, travelling in the Maruti van were killed on the spot," said Dipanshu Kabra, Mahasamund district police chief.

The dead included five women, five men and a two-year-old child.

Sudeshwar Sagar, the head of the family, was returning from a temple with family members including his 22-year-old daughter, Suman, who was scheduled to marry next month, police said.

The bodies were taken to the local hospital around midnight. Police have seized the truck that hit the Maruti van and are searching for the absconding driver.
