The injured, including a BSF constable and two women, were shifted to Agartala Medical College and Hospital following the shooting at Dhupiar Bandh under Kalamchara police station.

Senior police officers and political leaders rushed to the spot and an armed police contingent was deployed in the area.

West Tripura police chief K.V. Sreejesh told Hindustan Times from his camp at the spot that the trouble started when the locals clashed with a BSF contingent, which was searching for cannabis cultivation in the area. He said, “Police investigations will reveal what actually provoked the firing.”

The BSF has not yet issued any statement to present its case.

The police said Amir Hussain, 34, and Mahbul Mia, 25, were killed in the BSF firing while Joel Hussain, 17, Joynal Hussain, 25, Taslima Akhtar, 25, and Aleya Khatun, 21, BSF constable Nitai Roy, 38, and several unidentified persons were injured in the incident.
