The deceased, identified as Bir Pratap, 22, of Hardoi village in Uttar Pradesh, lived in Faridabad with his mother and three other family members.
He had been suffering from a mental illness. His mother had been planning to take him back to Hardoi but had been unable to leave due to bad weather.
On Tuesday, he left his small hutment in the NIT area, crying, and then jumped into the canal. His mother, who had followed him, could only wail at seeing her son drown.
