At least 25 people were injured when a fire broke out in a slum at suburban Bandra during the early hours on Thursday, officials said.
"Twenty-five people have been injured and twenty-one of them were discharged after treatment. Four persons have been admitted to the Bhabha Hospital in Bandra," disaster management officials said.
The fire had broken out at the Behrampada and Garibnagar slum colony near the Bandra railway station around 0400 hours and was brought under control only around 1000 hours, officials said.
Fire fighting operations in the area were still not over and fire officials were carrying out cooling operations to ensure the blaze was completely put out, they said.
As many as 25 fire engines, 16 water tankers and four ambulances were rushed to the slum, consisting mainly of homes, after the fire was reported.
Fire officials had a hard time battling the spread of the fire due to the narrow lanes of the colony and the explosion of gas cylinders kept at homes. A few fire officials also sustained minor injuries while battling the fire.
Residents of the slum fled with whatever possessions they could gather after the fire broke out.
