A driver from the medical education department narrated in the special court how the suspected Lashkar-e-Tayyeba operative Mohammad Ajmal Amir Kasab and his partner Abu Ismail rendered him incapable of driving.
Maruti Phad, the driver, was hit in the stomach. He also lost two of his right-hand fingers when Kasab and Ismail fired at him on November 26, 2008.
“I can’t drive any more as I can’t hold the steering wheel,” Phad told the special court judge ML Taheliyani.
Phad had reached the corner of the Mahapalika Marg when some policemen from the Azad Maidan station and the two terrorists started cross-firing.
The witness said the pair then turned towards him and hurled a grenade. “Before they could reach the car, I locked all the doors from inside and pretended to be dead,” added Phad. “Both of them tried to break open the car doors, but could not.”
Phad also witnessed Kasab and Abu Ismail killing the three high-ranking policemen and fleeing in the police car.
