Government litigation accounts for nearly 30 percent of the cases pending in courts across the country, Union Minister for Law and Justice Veerappa Moily said on Sunday.
"More than 30 per cent of the litigation space is covered by government litigations. This space should be reduced and the space should be given to the 'aam aadmi' (common man)," Moily told reporters at the end of a review meeting of implementation of 13th Finance Commission recommendations on improving justice delivery and other matters held in Goa.
Moily said that all states had been asked to drastically trim down their pendency to not more than three years.
Moily said that both the state and the central governments would be asked come up with policies in order to ensure that unnecessary litigation does not clog the judicial process.
"We need to vacate unnecessary appeals. They appeals should be reviewed thoroughly."
"The main idea is that there should be a speedy disposal of cases and pendency should not be for more than three years," Moily said.
