The veterinary and animal sciences teachers association (VASTA) commemorated the 14th world veterinary day by launching a snake helpline on the occasion of World Veterinary Day at Dr GC Negi College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Himacvhal Pradesh Agriculture University (CSK- HPAU) on Saturday.
People will be able to seek assistance in case of any emergency associated with snakes in residential areas at help line 9882602677. Helpline will be managed by the Blue Cross Society of Himachal Pradesh.
VASTA president Adarsh Kumar said besides creating awareness about poisonous and non-poisonous snakes, the helpline will rescue these much feared creatures from the human dwellings.
“Initially this service will be available in the Palampur region but will gradually be extended all over the state,” said Kumar. VASTA secretary Subhash Verma said that the theme for this year's World Veterinary Day was, 'Vaccination to prevent protect' and the association has started an awareness programme on the given theme.
Earlier, director of extension education, KK Katoch, while addressing the veterinarians and students as a chief guest, underlined the importance of livestock wealth which was an integral component of agriculture system.
He said it was vital to keep the animals healthy for which vaccination plays a major role and high quality vaccines, appropriate infrastructure, monitoring of flocks and adequate financial resources were needed for any successful vaccination campaign. C Varshney, dean, veterinary and animal sciences college, appreciated the efforts of the association for inculcating professionalism in the students and staff. Many competitions were also organised and a bike rally was also flagged off by the chief guest. A large number of scientists, students and some progressive farmers participated in the celebrations.
