The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has tied up with US-based technology provider MITRE Corporation to set up a high-tech research, development and training facility in Hyderabad.
AAI official said the proposed centre would be opened at the Begumpet airport in Hyderabad, which is no longer used for commercial operations.
“The facility would be used to train air traffic controllers (ATC). It is also proposed to set up simulators for training purposes,” a senior AAI official said.
A number of airports in the US and Europe, which are no longer in active use, have been turned into research and development centres providing training in air traffic management.
AAI would get the latest state of the art ‘Human-in-the-Loop’ computer simulation capability — a virtual, real-time ATC simulation to manage air traffic.
“It helps identify ATC problems, develops solutions for them and achieving cost-efficient deployment of the new solutions,” the official said.
MITRE is also offering its portable ATC simulation system that can be used to train personnel at any location with the use of a few laptops.
AAI chairman VP Agrawal said the state-owned airport operator had already made substantial improvements in air traffic infrastructure to cope with the growing traffic demands.
