The Narendra Modi government is treading with both care and caution before finalising its heavy legislative agenda for the upcoming budget session of Parliament.
Different ministries have been given extra time to prioritise their bills for the session expected to start from second week of July. The parliamentary affairs ministry had earlier sought a list of preferred legislation from all ministries by June 12. A revised deadline is now till June 23.
Sources told HT that the set of anti-corruption bills, earlier flaunted by Rahul Gandhi, will also be accorded “priority” but the key legislation may see several tweaks to ensure the political imprint of the Modi government.
“Steps to curb corruption are a key agenda of this government. But the bills may see some changes, particularly the ones which have lapsed with the previous Lok Sabha,” said a source.
In other words, four crucial bills that have lapsed — on right of citizens for time-bound delivery of public services, curbing benami transactions, prevention of bribery to foreign officials and setting new standards in public procurement — may see changes.
Sources suggested that bill on right of citizens for time-bound delivery of public services may be accorded higher priority.
