The Congress-led Assam government has been working against the interest of the minorities and failed to fulfil the hopes and aspirations of the common people, president of newly-formed Asom United Democratic Front Badaruddin Ajmal alleged on Wednesday.
"The Congress-government in Assam has been exploiting the minorities for their own interests and working against them. People are not satisfied with the functioning of the government," Ajmal told reporters in Muzaffarnagar.
The AUDF, which was floated just ahead of the April Assembly elections in Assam as an amalgam of over a dozen minority organisations and political parties, won 10 seats and is also believed to have caused defeat of Congress candidates in several other seats.
Ajmal, a perfume baron worth over Rs 100 crore with business interests in several Gulf countries, accused the Tarun Gogoi Government of doing nothing for the welfare of the minorities.
He claimed that the people who had entered Assam before March 25, 1971 (the cut of date for granting citizenship to immigrants) were not getting citizenship and were "facing atrocities".
Ajmal, also a member of working committee of the Islamic seminary Darul-Uloom, Deoband, said that his outfit would contest the next Panchayat elections in the state with full force.
