The bombs, targeting a passing Iraqi army patrol, detonated at a busy intersection in the Qahira neighbourhood during the morning rush hour as people headed to work, police 1st Lt Mohammed Khayun said.

Most of the casualties were caused by the car bomb, police Lt Bilal Ali Majid said, adding that the wounded included at least six Iraqi soldiers.

Hundreds of Iraqis have been killed by suicide bombings, shootings and mortar and rocket attacks over the past two weeks.
