At swimming world championships, a deep and delightful plunge

American Olympic champion Missy Franklin won her second gold of the world swimming championships on Tuesday with victory in the women’s 100 metres backstroke.

American Olympic champion Missy Franklin won her second gold of the world swimming championships on Tuesday with victory in the women’s 100 metres backstroke.

The 18-year-old powered home in a time of 58.42 seconds at the Palau Sant Jordi following Sunday’s 4x100 metres freestyle relay triumph.

Australia’s Emily Seebohm, second behind Franklin at the Olympics in London last year, was second in 59.06 seconds and Aya Terakawa of Japan took bronze in 59.23.

Agnel wins men’s 200m freestyle world gold
Olympic champion Yannick Agnel won the men’s 200m freestyle world title with Conor Dwyer of the USA second and Russia’s Danila Izotov third. France’s Agnel clocked 1min 44.20secs, more than a second ahead of Dwyer at 1.12 back with Izotov 1.39sec adrift.

Ledecky sets 1500m record, wins gold
US teenager Katie Ledecky set a new record in winning the women’s 1500m freestyle title with Dane Lotte Friis second and New Zealander Lauren Boyle third. The 16-year-old clocked a record of 15mins 36.53secs.
