Suspected terrorists shot dead a Jammu and Kashmir Awami League leader and his bodyguard in Doda district on Monday evening, police said.

Mohan Lal Bhandari, who had twice unsuccessfully contested assembly elections, was shot dead in Chatroo, about 250 km northeast of here, when he was returning to Kishtwar. His personal security guard was also shot dead.

"Militants are behind this killing," Doda's Senior Superintendent of Police Manohar Singh said.
"Investigations have been launched and we are trying to find out which group is behind Bhandari's assassination," he said.
