Raja Bhartrihari says in Neeti Shakatam “The sun causes the lotus to bloom. The moon on its own makes the lily to bloom. The cloud too, without being asked, gives water. Great souls are always taking the initiative to do good to others.”
This is a great lesson of nature. All things offer themselves. The earth gives. The sun gives. The universe gives. Life gives itself as the sun gives itself, with no thought of holding back. Life gives itself as rain gives itself. Rain does not ask of one, “Are you worthy” or of another “have you the price.” Life gives abundantly.
Vedas teach man to lead practically a pure and pious life full of philanthropy and fellow feeling, benefaction and benevolence. This is the only way to salvation. “Be good and do good” is the gist of Vedic philosophy. The doctrine of “be good, do good” is based on the “doctrine of truth.”
Our problem is how to distinguish the good from the bad, the right from the wrong. The best method of judging a thing whether it is good or bad, true or untrue, right or wrong is to apply the principle to one’s own self. When I do good, I feel good. When I do bad, I feel bad. Do to others as you wish it to be done to you by others.
Albert Einstein had said, “It is every man’s obligation to put back into the world, at least the equivalent of what he takes out of it. Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile.” We too must give all we have; in the end, life will let us hold nothing back. We cannot hold on to anything too long. If we do, we will wish we had let it go. We cannot hold on to breath. We cannot hold on to time.
