The body of a full-grown tiger was found in a well near Chitegaon forest in Mul Tehsil in Chandrapur district on Saturday.
According to reports, the body was sighted by some shepherds this afternoon and they informed the nearest forest department office. The range forest officer (RFO) of the area, JT Giradkar immediately rushed to the spot along with the staff and fished out the body from the well.
Talking to Hindustan Times, RS Yadhav, the conservator of forests (CF) of Chandrapur-North, claimed that it was a case of an accidental death. The tiger might have fallen in the well while chasing the prey in the jungle.
“We have also found a dead body of a civet cat in the well. It appears that while chasing the civet cat, both the animals fell into the well having no parapet wall and drowned. The well is around 30-feet deep and with fulls of water because of adequate rainfall this monsoon. We removed the body of the tiger and the necessary formalities have been completed,” he said.
According to available information, the dead tiger was a male and aged 6-7 years old.
Meanwhile, the death of around five tigers since January this year in Chandrapur district alone has alarmed environmentalists. The forest officials suspected some of the tigers might have been poisoned by villagers. Environmentalists suspect poaching could also be the reason.
