As soon as the police van carrying the prisoners reached the civil court premises, two crude bombs exploded, Superintendent of Police Suresh Chaudhary said. One live bomb was also recovered from the spot and was promptly defused, he added.

Taking advantage of the commotion after the explosion, the dacoit Sant Lal Sah tried to escape. He ran up to the boundary wall, but fell down near the bushes while trying to jump across from the eastern side of the campus. The the police caught hold of him, the SP said.

Later, additional police force was rushed to the civil court and the prisoners were produced before the court, the SP said. Police said Shah would be interrogated to trace the criminals, who were involved in the attack.

Hajipur town police detained one person from Bidupur area and recovered a motorcycle. Police said the motorbike was parked on the side from where Sah had tried to escape.
