Life as a cricketer isn’t easy and the last few months have been hectic. So, it’s nice to get a two-day break before stepping into the last 10 days of the tournament. Luckily, our last game was in Mohali and that allowed me to dash off to Jalandhar and spend some quality time with my mother.
Friends now
Coming back to the Mumbai Indians, a lot of people have asked me how it is to share the dressing room with Andrew Symonds. The media wants to be a fly on the wall to see how we live under one roof, how much we talk, what all we share and how close or far we sit to each other. Let me tell you that we have a great sense of camaraderie and enjoy each other's company.
‘Symmo’, as we fondly call him, is a great guy and true professional. When he was picked by Mumbai, I was surprised. But at the same time, I am one of the senior-most players here and it's my responsibility to make everyone comfortable in the dressing room. It doesn't matter if it is R Sathish or Symonds. He is a new entrant and I’ve always admired the cricketer in him. ‘Symmo’ is a fierce competitor, who won't take a backward step on the field. Off it, he doesn't miss a chance to crack a joke or share his experience with youngters.
Past is passé
We are professional cricketers and bygones are bygones. What happened in the past has no relevance now and we have come a long way. One should not forget that playing for your country is like fighting on the border, where the ultimate goal is to win. In the heat of the moment a lot of things happen, and that was the case with both of us. But that doesn't mean those moments become the definition of your personality.
In fact, we don't have the time and energy to keep looking back at that incident and allow it to take some m ore space in our lives. What amuses me is that lot of people are still living in Sydney 2008. PMG
